FOURTEEN

“What’s your day look like?” Matt asked, poring over his calendar as he sat on the sofa in the garden room. He kept side-eying me like he was back in the shower and he could barely contain himself.

I wished he wouldn’t. I wouldn’t object to him dragging me into any private space for round two. Maybe tomorrow.

“I have nothing—studying later, maybe.” I leaned against the edge of the sofa, the shirt I wore stretched over my chest and clinging to my skin, completely for his benefit. I liked the way he looked at me. I kept trying to slow my heart rate with no luck. I wasn’t over what we’d just done.

“Revel in nothing to do,” he said. “The joys of youth.”

“I’m worried about it. I don’t like when I can’t distract my brain.”

“Because of the depression?” Matt asked, keeping his distance, and I wished he’d touch my face again.

“Because without distractions, I can think.” I forced myself into action, taking the seat next to him, needing the reassurance of his touch. His reaction would tell me enough. “Too much thinking and I remember I’m miserable.”

He didn’t hesitate to slide his hands around my body, finding all the places I needed him to be. “Maybe I can help with that.”

“You already do.” I closed my eyes, breath after breath of him soothing the cracks in my chest. “You help more than you know. All of this.” His touch, even before we’d fucked, the looks and soft gestures, they’d saved me in so many ways. I didn’t know touch starved was a real thing, but I felt it in my bones.

I guess I hadn’t realized last year with as many people as I took to bed, and they kind of worked. Maybe that’s why when the pain stopped working, sex did. Because I needed contact.

“That makes me happy.”

“Sometimes I just want to be held.” It scared me to admit it to him, but I faced it because he was worth it. “But every time you touch me, it helps. A little bit of human contact.”

He wrapped his arm around me. “I’ve noticed when we go days without it, I crave it. I can’t stop myself. I have to keep touching you.”

I twisted towards him. “Don’t stop.”

His mouth found mine, like we fit even if our lives didn’t. “I can’t.”

“Mr. Vice President…” Oliver, one of Matt’s agents, stood in the doorway when we broke apart. “Excuse me.”

“What is it?” Matt asked, his body rigid.

“You have a call you need to take from the President.”

Matt swore under his breath and pulled me closer in a tight hug before we detangled ourselves. “This might take a while. Tomorrow?”

I gave him a tight smile. “Sure.”

Lucas gave me one look when I got outside. “Spill.”

I glanced around. The rest of my detail kept its distance as we waited for our ride. “It happened and I’m only telling you because Oliver walked in on us and I don’t want you blindsided.”

His brows pulled. “I’m sorry.”

The SUV pulled up.
