FOURTEEN
âWhatâs your day look like?â Matt asked, poring over his calendar as he sat on the sofa in the garden room. He kept side-eying me like he was back in the shower and he could barely contain himself.
I wished he wouldnât. I wouldnât object to him dragging me into any private space for round two. Maybe tomorrow.
âI have nothingâstudying later, maybe.â I leaned against the edge of the sofa, the shirt I wore stretched over my chest and clinging to my skin, completely for his benefit. I liked the way he looked at me. I kept trying to slow my heart rate with no luck. I wasnât over what weâd just done.
âRevel in nothing to do,â he said. âThe joys of youth.â
âIâm worried about it. I donât like when I canât distract my brain.â
âBecause of the depression?â Matt asked, keeping his distance, and I wished heâd touch my face again.
âBecause without distractions, I can think.â I forced myself into action, taking the seat next to him, needing the reassurance of his touch. His reaction would tell me enough. âToo much thinking and I remember Iâm miserable.â
He didnât hesitate to slide his hands around my body, finding all the places I needed him to be. âMaybe I can help with that.â
âYou already do.â I closed my eyes, breath after breath of him soothing the cracks in my chest. âYou help more than you know. All of this.â His touch, even before weâd fucked, the looks and soft gestures, theyâd saved me in so many ways. I didnât know touch starved was a real thing, but I felt it in my bones.
I guess I hadnât realized last year with as many people as I took to bed, and they kind of worked. Maybe thatâs why when the pain stopped working, sex did. Because I needed contact.
âThat makes me happy.â
âSometimes I just want to be held.â It scared me to admit it to him, but I faced it because he was worth it. âBut every time you touch me, it helps. A little bit of human contact.â
He wrapped his arm around me. âIâve noticed when we go days without it, I crave it. I canât stop myself. I have to keep touching you.â
I twisted towards him. âDonât stop.â
His mouth found mine, like we fit even if our lives didnât. âI canât.â
âMr. Vice Presidentâ¦â Oliver, one of Mattâs agents, stood in the doorway when we broke apart. âExcuse me.â
âWhat is it?â Matt asked, his body rigid.
âYou have a call you need to take from the President.â
Matt swore under his breath and pulled me closer in a tight hug before we detangled ourselves. âThis might take a while. Tomorrow?â
I gave him a tight smile. âSure.â
Lucas gave me one look when I got outside. âSpill.â
I glanced around. The rest of my detail kept its distance as we waited for our ride. âIt happened and Iâm only telling you because Oliver walked in on us and I donât want you blindsided.â
His brows pulled. âIâm sorry.â
The SUV pulled up.
